Give George Washington a 21st-Century Smile

George Washington may not have used his dentures for more than two hundred years, but that wonít stop them from getting a twenty-first century update thanks to a new contest sponsored by The Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry in honor of the Museumís 10th Anniversary.

This spring, more than 900 dental laboratories in the United States and Canada are invited to replicate George Washingtonís maxillary and mandibular denture, based on the hippopotamus ivory and gold set created for Americaís first president in 1795 by New York dentist John Greenwood. The winning entries will be displayed at the Museum and featured in the Museumís trade show booth and in JDTís August/September issue.

Entries must be received by the National Museum of Dentistry by May 15 and will be judged based on the quality of the materials used, the quality of workmanship, accuracy to the original specifications and resemblance to the original denture. Full rules and entry information for the George Washington Dental Laboratory project are available by calling the National Museum of Dentistry at (410) 706-8704.

OrthoClear Faces FTC Challenge

The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus has referred advertising by OrthoClear, Inc., the maker of an ìinvisibleî orthodontic device, to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), following the companyís refusal to participate in an NAD review. Advertising claims for OrthoClearís aligners were challenged by Align Technology, Inc., a competing maker of orthodontic devices. Align Technology took issue with a wide range of claims, including comparative performance claims, superior fit and comfort claims, hygiene claims and clarity and aesthetics claims.

OrthoClear, in a statement to NAD, the advertising industryís self-regulatory forum, said that the company is engaged in state and federal litigation with Align Technology. Due to the pending litigation, as well as its own pending patents, it is not in a position to subject its proprietary process to disclosure through an NAD review proceeding, the company said.
