Founded in 2009, Outside The Time Zone is the curatorial partnership between Chris Rawson and Julian Calero. OTZ presents exhibitions, performances and special projects with emerging artists in collaboration with galleries and alternative spaces in New York City and beyond.
The exhibition Chris Burnside, Garek Druss, Ben Needham, and Adam Taye is both the inaugural exhibition for Seattle’s Kymata Project Space and the first of many projects Outside The Time Zone will be presenting in collaboration with galleries around the world. Seattle was chosen as the first host city because the exhibited artists and the curators have intimate connections with the Emerald City and the Northwest. The exhibition is conceived as a meditation on landscape and is inspired by the act of homecoming, travel and displacement, which are themes prevalent in OTZ’s ongoing nomadic curatorial project.
Moving forward in 2010, not only will Outside The Time Zone introduce artists to new communities in collaboration with local galleries , but will exhibit artists from around the world in New York.
Taking its name from a hypnotic track on the Sun Ra album The Night of The Purple Moon (1970), Outside The Time Zone explores the concept of passage and its varying effects as a person or an object travels between point A and point B. Through this process of transport, the structural and functional nature of the person or object can shift and the outcome is often different than one expects. The artists in the project explore a myriad of sources while considering the larger themes of mutation and passage in their own practice.
