 Industry Loses Larry Price, CDT

Larry L. Price, 57, of Lewisberry, Pa., passed away Aug. 30.

Price was a graduate of the Career Academy and secured his first job as a dental technician with Barrett Dental Laboratories in Chambersburg, Pa. His next career move was to operate his own laboratory for thirteen years before joining Thayer Dental Laboratory, CDL, in 1987 as its laboratory manager. Among his responsibilities, he supervised more than 60 people and was one of the directors of training and education for the laboratory's PTC TVS 2000 training system.

Surviving are his mother, Ruth Price of Waynesboro; his wife, Rosie (Helfrick) Price; three children, Chad D. Price, Shelley D. Garcia, both of Harrisburg, and Shaun D. Price of Mont Alto, Pa.; brother, Perry Price of Tomstown, Pa.; three sisters, Kim Tagg of Hagerstown, Md., Tammy Doherty of Glastonbury, Conn., and Trudy Lockhart of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren, Elijah and Gabriella Garcia, Ella and Grant Price, all of Harrisburg, and Nicholas Price of Mont Alto, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was laid to rest at St. John's Cemetery in Camp Hill, Pa., on Sept. 3.

  DSG Acquires Americus

Dental Services Group (DSG) announced that it has acquired Americus Dental Labs, Inc., a leading full-service dental laboratory company that is based in Jamaica, N.Y., with annual revenues of $28 million.

"The Americus lab group and the 300-plus members of its team represent an excellent fit with DSG," according to Dental Services Group President and CEO Robert Ditta, CDT. "We look forward to working with our new partners toward the achievement of our long-term strategic growth plan."

Americus President and CEO George Benson stated, "This is a great opportunity for Americus to join forces with a progressive organization and the merger will provide substantial synergies for the two companies."

Keith Adams has shifted roles from director of finance to vice president. He will be responsible for the operations of the Americus laboratories.

Market Moves

Zimmer Holdings, Inc., reported financial results for the quarter ended June 30. For the quarter, the Company announced net sales of $882 million, an increase of four percent reported and five percent constant currency. Diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $0.81 reported and $0.83 adjusted, exceeding First Call earnings estimates of $0.82 adjusted.

Ivoclar Vivadent AG announced that it has made an investment in Sirona Dental Systems, Inc. Ivoclar Vivadent is a material partner for Sirona's CEREC System and inLab Technology. Ivoclar Vivadent made a monetary investment, however, the companies agreed to keep the amount and the details of the teamwork confidential, according to Daniela Hˆfle, Ivoclar Vivadent's public relations manager and head of public relations international.

3i backed OrthoClear in $10 million financing round. 3i announced it has led a series D investment in OrthoClear Holdings, Inc. The financing will be used to fund OrthoClear's projected capital expenditures, sales and marketing as well as the company's upcoming international expansion into Europe and the Far East.

DENTSPLY International Inc., announced it has acquired a 40 percent interest in Materialise Dental N.V., in a cash transaction of 20 million euros ($25.7 million). Materialise Dental is a market leader in dental implantology simulation software and a leading manufacturer of a variety of surgical guides to assist in the placement of dental implants. It is based in Belgium

 

Awards and Appointments

The Identalloy Council recently elected new officers and directors. Anton Woolf was elected to a two-year term as president. David Sklarski was elected to a two-year term as treasurer. Both will serve as Identalloy directors. Woolf is vice president of Argen Corp. and previously held the office position of Identalloy Council treasurer. Sklarski is president of Sterngold and has taken an active role in Identalloy Council matters for the past several years.

 

Darby Dental Supply announces the promotion of Tim Nicholas to the position of assistant sales manager and Melody Scott to the position of assistant sales manager. 

Whip Mix Corporation announced Peter Norris has joined the company as operatory product manager.

DENTSPLY International Inc., announced that Chairman and CEO Gary K. Kunkle, Jr., has indicated his intention to retire from the company effective Dec. 31. President and chief operating officer Bret W. Wise has been appointed to the DENTSPLY Board of Directors. Upon Kunkle's retirement at the end of the year, Wise will assume responsibilities as chairman and CEO while retaining his responsibilities as president. Senior vice president Christopher T. Clark will become executive vice president and chief operating officer.

DentalEZÆ Group announced that Vickie Waitsman, vice president ñ general counsel of DentalEZ Group, was recently elected to serve as chairperson of the Dental Trade Alliance Board of Directors.

 

Noteworthy

Sirona Dental Systems will be providing inLabÆ owners the latest information, valuable business opportunities and many other reasons to celebrate the upcoming CEREC 20th Anniversary Experience. The milestone event is taking place on Oct. 13-15h at Ballyís Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Dunn Diehl Dental Lab opened its doors on Oct. 1 in Minot, N.D., It purchased the assets of the 100-year old Midwest Dental Lab and is a full-service dental laboratory.

Los Angeles Community College educators have completed the first phase of their hands-on instructor training at Productivity Training Corporation as they prepare to implement PTCís educational materials within their curriculum.

DTA recently completed its annual meeting in July at the Hyatt Regency Incline Village on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in Nevada. The meeting saw record attendance with representatives from more than 85 member companies.

Recently, Precision Ceramics in Montclair, Calif., celebrated three years of DAMAS accreditation.
