The changes in materials, equipment and techniques, combined with managed care, competitive pressure and the high cost of new technology all make operating a profitable laboratory more complex and much more difficult. Some laboratory owners wonder if it can be done at all.

Dear Ms. Marketing: The dental laboratory down the street from me has lowered their prices.  Should I lower mine?

Inertia is our fear of change, experiencing failure and disapproval or fear of the new and unfamiliar. Furthermore, it would take more force to move or change direction for an older established laboratory than for a newer start.

The hard disk drive in your computer is the place where the data is stored and the data is at its most current. So, if it fails and there is not a current backup then it can be a very serious problem.

A solid, well thought out backup plan can mean the difference between a normal day and a major disaster in the form of lost business data, financial and legal information, family photos and videos, and a great deal of time and money trying to recover data and get caught up.

If you are one of those people who prefer keeping their data on the computer then you might lose it all if your hard disk crashed or is damaged. In a fraction of an instant all your precious business data will be gone.

The ideas don’t necessarily need to be new to have a good impact.  With all the holidays coming up there are lots of things you can do to set your lab apart from the competition.

Auditing is a key component in the measurement of the effectiveness and performance of a quality system. Both FDA and DAMAS require, at a minimum, an annual audit. DAMAS requires that the lab audit the management system to verify that the manufacturing processes comply with planned arrangements.

I so often see non-strategic marketing executed in an attempt to acquire any new client. If we work hard at determining who it is we want to be what for, we should also spend some time chasing the right prospects.

Sadly, the vast majority of opening statements seemed designed to create more resistance than they do relationships. In sales, your opening statement is absolutely critical to your success. So why do so many otherwise good sales people get it so wrong?

As we craft strategies and executions for our advertising campaigns, know that brand character can be even more persuasive than the actual selling message. It’s hard to be emotionally committed to an attribute. Features don’t beget followers.

A newsletter can emphasize higher margin products, among both customers and employees. For employees, reiterate the benefits (for them and the company) of selling a product or set of products with a higher profit margin. For customers, let them know these products exist, how to buy them, and outline the benefits of using them.

It turns out, you earn a Good Eye every time before final quality check off that you catch a potential defect, flaw or mistake that would have compromised the quality of the final restoration. That meant everyone was responsible for quality and was rewarded for behavior that reduced remakes and reworks.

Sadly, the only people who can fully appreciate their art without the help of words are usually other artists. The visual artists who succeed are the ones who have an agent, a gallery owner or an art critic as a surrogate voice. Sound familiar?

“Sue’s gotten something in her eye – what do we do?” You don’t want this to happen in your laboratory, so make sure that your workers all know what action to take in an emergency situation.

Dear Ms. Marketing: I don’t really want to grow my laboratory as much as I want to be more successful with the employees and accounts I have now. Can you help with some ideas?

Many employers may view safety as a financial burden, but there’s more financial liability without a safety program. When on-the-job injuries occur, the employer is required by law to provide medical care for that injury, and in many cases, monetary payments to compensate for resulting temporary or permanent disabilities.

When times are good, America gets soft. I’ve seen it. But when times get tough, America tightens her belt, rolls up her sleeve and shows her true colors. I’ve seen that, too. All we need is a leader.

Dear Ms. Marketing: I have been using your 8-week program and it has been going great. However, there is a particular account that I want to target what can I do?

The toughest step is not executing the strategic initiatives or implementing the changes we design together. The toughest step is the very first step: Asking for Help!

It is recognized that the product is the sum total of all parts and labor combined. A major component of continuous improvement is prevention of a defective/non-conforming product. It is really not a question of if there will someday be an untoward event in dentistry that would necessitate these guidelines and regulations be in place, rather when.  It is likely it has already happened and may not have been discovered or reported.  We must stand up and be the voice for our laboratory profession.  The voice of what is best and right for us and for the patients we ultimately serve.

The CDL modernization committee established the criteria for dental labs for their initial application and for their five-year revalidation application. As a member of that committee and as a safety expert, I have been asked to provide a more detailed explanation of the physical facility and equipment requirements to assist dental laboratories in submitting appropriate photographs for compliance with these areas.

It appears we are headed into some degree of recession. I am of the camp that believes there is little the White House can do to change the normal cycles of the stock market and the economy in general. With the recently approved stimulus package and more Fed rate cuts, I still think we are going to just add a slow economy to the other challenges we face as small business owners this year and next.

Cell phones that look cooler than Star Trek communicators, 60-inch flat screen televisions that hug the wall, CAD/CAM, laser and other prototyping advancements that morph our idea of what dental technology is, are here upon us, right now. Yet, it still takes the human mind to observe, evaluate, design and create these and other innovative uses of these products and applications.
