Some of us think of ourselves as a Hank Aaron and some are a Ty Cobb. A Barry Bonds or a Hugh Duffy.  We either consistently get on base or we go down swinging for the fences. Understanding your attitude towards risk and reward is essential for a happy life as a lab owner, or a corporate technician.

Your goal was to get one thing and you settled for another. You changed your goal. Sometimes you alter your goal, but we never want to settle. We never want to just get by in life, we want to be successful.

There are sure many pieces of advice on goal setting but I'm going to try and look at simple ways to set and realize achievable goals. Achievable, because many persons simply put down goals that are so unrealistic that they do not even intend achieving.

Dear Ms Marketing:  I know you don’t have a crystal ball, but I need some help with what to do about the future of my laboratory. Can you help?

What about everything that needs to get done to ensure you’ve wrapped up all the loose ends in your safety and quality programs at work? While Mary is jet-setting the globe, how about you and I take a  look at the items in both programs that need to be done at least once a year to ensure you reduce your risk of regulatory trouble.

If you have to pay for advice….you really ought to take it and other survival lessons Mark learned at survival camp that actually do have meaning in the dental laboratory profession.

I would start by making the word WOW stand for something. For example, it could mean Working On Winning. You could call it: things that make you say WOW. Figure out what fits you and your business best. You could have a contest with your employees to see what they come up with.

Don’t let yourself get trapped into thinking that when others seek you counsel and advice it is a distraction from getting other (more important) tasks done. To be sure, management is about doing things right.  Leadership is about doing right things. We need both skills in our dental laboratory profession.

Regardless of the economic climate, most dental laboratories will experience collection difficulties sooner or later. Accounts receivable are your laboratory’s major asset, and provide the funds for continued operation. Read how columnist Mark C. Jackson, RDT, gets accounts to pay up.

Are you struggling in the effort to make your small business successful? Does it feel like you are working harder and you still don't see the results you desire? Or maybe you want to grow your business to the next level of success. Let's take a look at the top 10 ways to increasing productivity and better time management.

When you want to raise the level of your company's productiveness, you can change a few things about individual employees' techniques as well as edit some overall company practices and procedures.

As I work with clients this tool is becoming increasingly important. To try to track your correspondence, email, documents, phone calls and appointments with your customers and prospects is nearly impossible to do on paper. I have yet to find someone who has done it successfully. Even those people who are not computer savvy need to understand and learn this powerful tool. Why? Because it can increase your productivity and bottom line.

When quality is combined with lean, the quality function becomes preventive with its objective to develop quality at the source. The quality role will be to analyze cause and effect, predict failure modes, and prevent them from happening. Inspection of the product will move to a process/product auditing focus. Lean is a business improvement initiative that is applicable to the entire organization.

There’s activity around the country right now with OSHA inspections of dental laboratories. In some cases the inspection is a result of a random inspection in which OSHA determines who to inspect and in other cases, it’s a complaint by an employee or former employee. Whatever the case, if you’re the subject of the inspection, you certainly want to be ready and lockout/tagout is a critical component of your safety program.

Every laboratory owner should have a customer agreement that establishes an understanding of who takes responsibility for what. Many of these areas include the fitness of any appliance for a specific use, final determination of fitness, warranty on said work and even terms for payment. Having a written policy on your prescription form can reduce the likelihood of having problems involving lawyers.

A true transformation requires an inventory of our beliefs, which are based on agreements we have made with life. We can transform our beliefs and break our old, self-limiting agreements by practicing these four agreements.

Dear Ms. Marketing: In the past I had tried a Web site and had little response. Do you think that with all the advancement in new technology should I revisit a Web site?

Philip Russo, CDT, is sick and tired of hearing his fellow dental technicians describe themselves as craftsmen and thinks you should be too.

Typically a recession drives small businesses to evaluate, re-design and refine their product offerings and marketing processes as they focus on cash flow, costs, customer retention and survival. There has been an upsurge in Internet and email marketing, yet many top decision-makers in businesses nationwide and even globally still rely on traditional marketing tactics such as direct mail when positioning products, developing media strategies.

Are your sales declining or running flat but generating less profit? A natural reaction for many small business owners is to beef up their marketing to generate more leads. Before you do, take a few minutes and really look at your sales efforts. Here is why.

One of the most important things a business owner can do is learn how to speak about their business to others. Being able to answer the "What do you do?" question and sum up the unique aspects of their business in a way that excites others to inquire more in a brief and concise manner. This is often called the elevator pitch for the intended time it takes you to ride an elevator. Can you answer the "what do you do?" question in 30 seconds or less and entice your audience to want to learn more?

Some time ago I commented on how people tend to behave in group settings. This led to a series of e-mails I received from people asking me where they could find more information on what I called, herd management. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot to be found, not unless you are talking about the management of cattle, horses or swine. Then again, maybe that's not a bad place to start as their objective is essentially the same as moving the human animal.

If you have been in a leadership position for more than 24 hours then you have already experienced problems of one type or another. What are your options when the problem is one of your associates?

Many of us still reeling the world economic crisis surrounded by the debris of corporate collapses, career fallouts and companies teetering on the edge, not knowing where to turn next. The downturn has shown us some harsh lessons of competition in lean times. Whilst many companies are struggling, there are some which are flourishing. We take a look the 6 strategies which are crucial for companies to flourish in the new economy.

A retired technician expresses his frustration concerning a segment of denture laboratories specializing in same-day dentures. This opinion piece reflects Cosner's thoughts and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of NADL.

At a recent meeting with the folks from Affordable Care in Florida, I was sitting with my friend Dr. Terry Brown and he mentioned an angle he had put on helping his kids get a cell phone or their first car. Reaction at first was lukewarm, however, the growth and transformation has been remarkable.

Dear Ms. Marketing: We have had a couple of new female dentist open new practices in our area and I want to do some marketing just to those accounts. Is there anything I need to change about my material to make it more female friendly?

This month the National Safety Council’s monthly publication: America’s obesity epidemic and its effect on PPE and workplace safety. That really sparked my interest.

Most businesses at some time or another will need to restructure their business. In times of recession this becomes an important priority as a business restructure is often the key to survival.

When the economic environment is not favourable good leadership is vital to ensure that the company keeps on track. Indeed it is one of the secrets to a company's success.

Common mistake to avoid when performing your SWOT Analysis for your business, organization or even personal matters. Sample of such common mistake made in SWOT Analysis serves as a reference.

The two biggest opportunities that dentists miss that cost them millions and cost you hundreds of thousands!

Dear Ms. Marketing: My biggest fear about sales is failing. Do you have any advice that can help me overcome the failing fear factor?

I don’t know if Moore’s Law took into consideration the fact that as technology grows faster and faster and gets smaller and smaller, so does the writing in the operating instructions. It seems as though as soon as I figure out how something works, it becomes obsolete or is ready for an upgrade.

What is odorless, colorless, toxic, impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes and can kill you before you are aware of it? Carbon monoxide, or CO, is the answer. At lower levels of exposure, it causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu.

July

In the midst of all the other concerns that we have as the general public and as employers or employees, we now need to keep abreast of what’s happening with the flu pandemic since the World Health Organization has raised its level to Phase 6. This flu is categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a moderately severe pandemic.

With work slowing down, so have payments from my accounts.  Do you have some helpful tips on how to collect?

The nuance to notice here is how the customer isn't the focus, the business or workload has become the focus. When demands are high, the customer gets lost in the shuffle. When we are understaffed, the customer receives a lower level of service. It's important to remember that the customer needs to be the focus each and every day, in each and every thing that you do.

Good customer service can help a business in more ways than one. It can help you gain a substantial edge over your competitors; help with bringing in repeat customers and gain greater customer diversity, in addition to boosting the goodwill and the reputation of your business.

Maintaining customer relationships is the key to success in a business. Thus, never do the mistake of assuming that interaction between you and your customers is a mere transaction. Rather, treat it as an experience. This will help you to establish strong ties with your customers. In addition, marketing studies state that, customers are ready to pay much for any product/service provided they feel connected with the company they deal with.

I have recently gotten into two fairly heated debates on Dental Town and the IDF (Internet Dental Forum) on separate, but in my opinion, related topics. One is the proliferation of unlabeled generic zirconia products and the other is the huge number of off shore laboratories that are not disclosing materials or country of origin when distributing their work.

It is easy to create strategies and plans, but the devil is in the execution. An average strategy, well executed will always outperform a better plan that just sits in a notebook on a shelf.

June

How is your customer satisfaction being affected by this downturn? The fact that you may be receiving less work from your dental clients could be resulting in a better quality of work and perhaps you’re even providing more personalized service to your dental clients.

Before you start your presentation, write down your goal, research your audience, figure out two to three points you want to make, and how you'll show those points. Will you have a theme? For example, the theme of this tip is "high-impact, low cost" - it runs through everything I write. You write all this down before ever opening up PowerPoint.

Typically when someone is asked to create a presentation they open up PowerPoint and start typing away. They may borrow a few slides from another presentation but essentially PowerPoint is used to sequence sets of bullet points under headings. In fact the Outline facility in PowerPoint is very easy to use and particularly helpful when creating a set of bullet points and then re-ordering them or changing their level of importance.

If you're a business owner, entrepreneur, or manager at any level, you need to know how to persuasively present your views in writing. Even if your job doesn't require you to write formal proposals, you almost certainly must write letters, e-mails, and memos to persuade others to accept your ideas, commit to your causes, fund your projects, try your products, or buy your services.

I know the U.S. and global economies are challenged and we are in the midst of a serious recession. I also believe the media spin and irresponsible reporting have made everything seem worse than it really is. I am not Pollyanna here, just reporting some facts to consider.

I don’t think there are any real secrets to sales.  I do, however, think there are some real, fundamental steps you can take everyday to be successful at whatever you are doing.

Most businesses are just not tapping the potential to do more business, more frequently with their existing customers and are leaving money on the table for their competitors. Lacking the internal systems to manage the customer experience, most businesses invest too much in chasing new customers and do too little to delight and retain existing customers.

Let's examine some of the breakthroughs of modern marketing that have produced some big results for companies.

Right now, recall a specific marketing effort that didn't work out as well as expected. It might be something from the recent past or something you're going through right now. Now ask these questions.

What can we do in our dental laboratories to be like American Express and not like the airline in this tale? Let’s vow to make the rules fit our best customers, the 20 percent or so who account for 80 percent of our revenue and profit.

Shaun Keating, CDT, has spent the past six years building Keating Dental Arts in Irvine, Calif., into the powerhouse that it is today with more than 100 employees.

“Success for us in the early days was measured mostly by sales and getting new accounts,” Keating said. “In the last few years we really don’t concentrate so much on sales volume as much as we do on net margins.”

There seem to be many questions recently regarding the Hepatitis B vaccine protocol so it’s time to review this safety issue. Education of workers prior to acceptance or refusal of a vaccine is critical; therefore, your facility’s safety training program must be thorough in regard to this information.

Dear Ms. Marketing: I am looking for a way to increase revenue do you have any suggestions? Sure, I have some that may not have crossed you mind.

One of the occupational hazards of life in the modern industrial age is exposure to noise, both inside and outside the workplace. Acoustic noise can be defined as unwanted sound and loud sounds of 80 decibels (dB) are considered potentially hazardous.

There is a feeling at the workplace. People get the idea from management that it is OK to play around or that work is serious business. We are not saying you shouldn't have fun at work. Work should be a blast. The most fun thing at work is to succeed by taking pride in what you do.

Workplace bullying and workplace harassment are ugly members of the same family. They thrive in the workplace, wreaking havoc in the lives of innocent employees.

"Success is doing what you love and I mean with your work and free time. I think success has very little to do with how much money you have and more to do with quality of life. I have met plenty of people that are not rich and I believe they are very successful," said Kris E. Schermerhorn, CDT, with Northern Virginia Dental Laboratory, Inc. in Woodbridge, Va.

It seems like the dental laboratory is always feeling the crunch and taking the hard hits in the dental industry. And once again, we only have ourselves to blame for pulling the roof down upon ourselves.

Dear Ms. Marketing: I have a customer that is always complaining. Do you have any suggestions on how to handle an unhappy customer?

3D design for space planning allows you to create your project in a virtual reality environment on the computer. Like so many other technological advances, it takes a while before they get applied to healthcare, dentistry and, more specifically, the dental laboratory profession. You can walk through this virtual laboratory and make changes before you actually start to build.

Your brand is a customer's first impression of you, and if done properly, will be their lasting impression of your product or business. Since your brand is so important, you need to make sure it reflects your business in a positive way.

There's a saying among marketers that a buyer needs a hundred eyes, the seller only one. But as brands multiply and customers become more selective, the seller needs to get smarter.

With more than 80 percent of consumers visiting Web sites before they make purchasing decisions, a positive first impression of your brand image and message is critical to the sales process.

We have been here before and we will be here again.  I know the credit markets give this recession/bear market a bit of a twist, but our economy is truly cyclical.

Congress has encouraged OSHA to issue more stringent citations and penalties on employers who violate OSHA’s safety rules.  From information published about President Obama’s position on worker safety, it looks like this trend during his administration will continue.

I caught a lot of flack for it because at the time I predicted that milling machines would be a passing fad, and that they would simply be a small stepping stone to other technologies. I boldly stated that I would never buy one. Fast forward a decade or more, and my laboratory is filled with buzzing and humming milling machines, and we are working  with models milled from urethane blocks.

Dave Andrus, CDT, has a short commute down the stairs to get to work at Diamond Dental Studio in Byers, Colo., and that’s just how he wants it. The two-technician laboratory is a family affair and he has worked to build a client base at his self-described boutique laboratory who expect quality and are willing to pay for it.

You may be wondering if your organization can successfully weather the storm created by the current economic crisis. And you may be thinking that it's time to for drastic action. The action that is weighing on your mind is almost unthinkable.

OK, no one really likes change. Author W. Gary Gore suggests that even though an employee's perspective of their workplace culture might be crummy at least it is their personal crummy. They know it, they deal with it, and as bad as it may be, it is at least, a comfortable bad.

People and organizations (combinations of people) strive for homeostasis. Living organisms strive for a balance, and equilibrium. This is a survival mechanism and a protective strategy. Change involves risk and loss.

One of the most important tools of a quality system relates to your investigation of the cause of internal reworks and remakes.  FDA and DAMAS both require a corrective action process for handling of customer complaints and non-conforming product.

Sounds crazy doesn’t it? It is actually a very sane and easy strategy to pursue. You simply need three things to predictably accomplish this worthy goal.

Being aware of the business's needs allows you to consider suggestions from the professional and to make the best decisions for your business.

I am looking to spend some time outside of the office with my customers and I want to give them that wow factor. Do you have any suggestions?

The hard disk drive in your computer is the place where the data is stored, and the data is at its most current. So, if it fails and there is not a current backup then it can be a very serious problem.

The survival of a small business depends on the kind of business data you want to archive for the purposes of small business data backup. The first thing you must do is identify all the critical data that must be stored or recorded on a regular basis; of equal importance is that you must decide upon a regular schedule of archiving the data.

There's no such thing as backing up digital information too much, or too often. A solid, well thought out backup plan can mean the difference between a normal day and a major disaster.

Quantum is the Latin word for amount and, in modern understanding, means the smallest possible discrete unit of any physical property, such as energy or matter. But, I digress as I often do when writing this column (at least I did not try to explain string theory or black holes).  Here is a bit of an update on what 2009 will look like for me, and where this quantum fits in.

It’s that time of the year again to see what happened last year in regard to OSHA’s activity during the fiscal year 2008 (October 2007 through September 2008). The following were the top 10 most frequently cited standards for all types of industries.

The importance of strategic planning for an existing business in this turbulent economic time should be at the top of your list of things to do.  With the New Year just starting now is the time to take a look at where you are and where you want to go.

It’s never been easy to run a successful dental laboratory, and in this turbulent economy, it’s especially difficult. Last month I promised to give some suggestions for establishing realistic operating budgets. So let's get to it.
