Oral Health America (OHA) announces the launch of Fall for Smiles®, a public messaging campaign conducted in collaboration with Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait®, an initiative of the Dental Trade Alliance. The campaign begins in September to promote messages to consumers about the importance of self care, good nutrition, regular dental visits, and tobacco avoidance in maintaining oral health.

As the field of dental implantology continues to have a significant effect on dental treatment planning, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recently reaffirmed its position that, whenever reasonable, efforts should be made to save a patient’s natural dentition. What’s more, the AAP stressed that an evidence-based approach must always be taken when considering an individual’s treatment options, especially when it comes to surgical procedures such as tooth extraction and dental implant placement.

Dear Ms. Marketing: I have heard that in sales, “If you can make them laugh you can make them buy.” What can I do to be better at telling a joke or funny story that might help to make a sale?

We need to call attention to the value of your products and services - ideally focusing on something that differentiates you from the competition.

This part of quality assurance is important not only for DAMAS certification, but also to meet the requirements of the FDA’s quality system regulation. Being able to show competency of technicians seems to be a real challenge for dental laboratory owners.

We can all remember products that were dismal failures and caused us lot of money, and lost accounts. It’s still happening now, and we want to know how it can keep happening?

National Dentex Corporation, one of the largest owner/operators of dental laboratories in North America, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement and plan of merger to be acquired by GDC Holdings, Inc., which is a holding company of GeoDigm Corporation (GeoDigm), a technology based manufacturing and laboratory company and a portfolio company of Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe XI, L.P. (Welsh Carson).

The Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) has partnered with the FDI World Dental Federation to conduct an official review of the WHO Patient Safety Curriculum Guide (PSCG).  OSAP will also be working with the International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations (IFEDA) and other leading global organizations on the project.

Nobel Biocare announced today that it has signed a preferred partnership agreement with the Japanese company Noritake Dental Supply Co., Limited, a leading supplier of restorative and prosthetic materials for dentists and dental technicians.

The Pressing Introductory Course, given by Ivoclar Vivadent technical specialists and ICDE faculty, covers the fundamentals of the IPS Empress Esthetic Veneer technique and the IPS e.max components for pressing (IPS e.max Press, IPS e.max ZirPress) and IPS e.max Ceram for crown and bridge fabrication technique.

Dear Ms. Marketing:  I can’t get a call back from potential customers what do you think I am doing wrong?

One of the most troubling trends is the free substitution of products by laboratories, foreign and domestic, though in the case of pirated name brand products, China seems to be the most common offender.

Out of the 33 dental labs that were inspected by OSHA from Jan. 1, 2009 to Feb. 15, 2010, 16 were initiated by complaints and 14 were planned inspections because dental labs fell into a targeted industry category. Targeted industries are chosen for several reasons, one being survey results compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showing a high number of occupational injuries in a particular industry.

Not only do you need to develop a quality system in your laboratory, but also a need has been created for you to ensure as a consumer and business that the organizations producing products for you have a management system that will ensure conformity to your customer’s requirements.

Dear Ms. Marketing: How important do you think networking is to my dental laboratory business? We can’t market to the general public, so I don’t see were networking will work for me.

Not that I think we need more government intrusion in our lives, but I’m afraid that the wild-wild-west attitude that has permeated our industry has gotten out of hand. It’s become difficult to remain competitive and ensure our patients remain safe under the current conditions in our industry.

Without one new client, I could potentially grow this lab from $3 million to more than $8 million by concentrating the current doctors work with into just one lab. Is $8.8 million achievable? Of course not. But a $300,000 to $600,000 incremental growth in same store sales is very believable. Even in this current economy.

The Jordan Company, L.P. today announced that The Resolute Fund II, L.P. has acquired 100% of the assets and business of Zest Anchors, Inc. (“Zest”), a second generation family-owned and operated manufacturer of dental attachments.  The acquisition, which was completed on December 31, 2009, was made in partnership with the Zuest Family and certain members of management.  Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

There was a 92 percent increase in the number of dental laboratories visited in 2009 compared to 2008 and they were primarily a result of complaints. That trend will most likely continue this year.

I can rattle off a thousand unlikely scenarios that seemed to come to pass, all of which combined to help us develop and grow into a successful, progressive dental laboratory. It was the selfless acts of mentors like these that gave me the courage to take some chances.

Dear Ms Marketing: What is the difference between selling value and selling price?

First of all, find out what your customer wants. I don’t mean what you are selling but truly what your customer wants. If you are able to give your customer what they want, how important is the price?

I often write about being a resource to your clients. Treatment planning, case design, material selection and other technical support comes to mind. A valuable tool in this quest to help our doctors be their best are the various newsletters that evaluate materials and techniques.

Well, even though I realize that this subject is controversial to say the least, I would like to share some of my thoughts with you and hope you will take them as educational rather than an endorsement for doing business in China.

Well, It is time for me to put my mouth where the money is in growth for your laboratory by growing your clients. I have permission from Mercer Advisor to book several programs for laboratory exclusively for their clients.
