Meet Jim Glidewell, CDT
Jim Glidewell, CDT, really doesn't need an introduction. He's an undisputed force in the dental laboratory industry, an innovator, an inspiration and a strong supporter of the National Association of Dental Laboratories. Recently, he took time out of his schedule to chat with JDT Unbound. Here's our conversation.
What are your favorite types of cases to work on and why?
Our favorite type of case would be a full mouth implant restoration. It taxes every technology that we possess.
What is your favorite thing about being in the dental laboratory profession?
I love the business because of its inherent honesty. You are rewarded in direct proportion to your productivity. We create products that have real value to people.
What is the most rewarding thing about being an NADL member?
Being an NADL member assures access to services and programs that are only reached by large groups. The NADL also serves as our spokesperson and clearinghouse for agencies that need to address our profession. They give us a face.
Who do you look toward for professional inspiration?
My professional inspiration comes from quality control gurus like Juran and Deming. Operational gurus like Jack Welsh of GE. Akio Morita of Sony. Ray Croc of MacDonalds. They all have written books and are easily accessible.
What do you do when you're not on the clock?
I like cruising on boats, playing golf with regular friends, hanging out with my four young children and flying planes. However, to run a successful business today, you are always on the clock. You must think about your business 24/7! It's ok to vacation, but resist the temptation to go off the grid! Always stay in touch with your job. If the stress of staying in touch is too much, you are in the wrong job! I hardly ever go vacationing where I feel there is inadequate cell service. My employees deserve my undivided attention to assure their career growth goals.
